British Universities

British higher education is very famous and recognized all over the world. All of us know about well-known Oxford and Cambridge. But except these two universities in the UK, there are many other universities, which are also very good. All British universities are divided into several groups. The first group is called ancient universities. They were founded before the 19th century. To these type of universities belong University of Oxford (1167), University of Cambridge (1209), University of St Andrews (1413), University of Glasgow (1451), University of Aberdeen (1495) ,University of Edinburgh (1583), University of Dublin(1592). The next group is called red brick universities. They were founded in the 19th century and in the beginning of 20th century. This group consists of such universities, which are situated at the main industrial cities of England. Red brick universities are University of Birmingham, University of Bristol, University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, University of Manchester University, UMIST, and University of Sheffield. These universities got such title, because the majority of them were built from red bricks. One more group is called plate glass universities. They were created in the 1960-ies. These universities got such title because they were first universities where architects used plate glass in steel or concrete frames in design. To this group of universities belong University of Essex, University of Sussex, University of Warwick, and University of York etc. There is also group of universities, which were founded or got the title of universities in 1922 and after. They also are called post-1922 universities or modern universities. It is very large group of universities. In this group, you can find Anglia Ruskin University, University of Westminster, and Queen Margaret University etc. And the last group is presented by Open University. It is British university, which specializes only in distance education.
